Assignment four

Magazine illustration

This time design an illustration for the magazine based on a still life.  I have to select the items for the still life, which represent one of the topics:

  • Lost
  • Disaster
  • Discovery
  • Guilty secret

 an idea nr. 4

I did four drawings. I have four different ideas to choose from.  I feel like the fourth idea has the biggest chance to succeed as a final illustration.

stage 1

I inversed the colours using the computer program called Photoshop to achieve black and white effect. Next, I added more blue tone to make it more interesting.

stage 2

At this stage, I could do anything with this image.  I decided to play with more colours on the black background.

I was not happy with the result therefore I made decision about changing the colour of the background into something warmer.

stage 3

I was starting to like the idea therefore I was happy to work on the different parts of the illustration.

For the hands and the snake, I used the brown paper that I scanned earlier.  For the doll’s dress, I used material that I bought ages ago in the charity shop.  I liked the floral pattern therefore; I thought it would accomplish my illustration nicely.

stage 4

I am so happy that I can use the computer program as it makes my life easy as an illustrator.  It is so good when I want to see different results without loosing anything that I made before.  This time I made one layer invisible and I got very interesting effect.  I really liked my illustration without that pink background.

stage 5

I was very pleased at this stage of my illustration.  I was ready to play with the background and the words.  I used the Matisse ITC font to write everything.  I thought it would go nicely with the character and the style of my illustration.

I would like to say something about my illustration.  The story it is about a secret in the relationship.  The doll represents the female side of the relationship.  This time she has the guilty conscious therefore she cannot say anything. I used an apple as a symbol of forbidden fruit.  Someone took a bite out of it already.  I used a snake as another sing of romance. The doll is walking on the snake’s head to forget about betraying the one that she loves.  Two wedding rings are apart already.
The composition is good and it leads an eye in different places.

Project Visual distortion

Exercise : Visual distortion

I need to draw either a cat or a dog so it looks naturally. My second drawing has to be a bit different from the first one.  I should use no more than five lines to create my previous drawing. The third illustration I am going to create from a magazines and printouts.

first trial for this exercise ...

                                sketch nr.2

                                                   picture nr.2

                                                    picture nr.3

 Exercise 1

I took my dog Casper as an object for this task.  Casper is York therefore; he is very small and very lively.  It was a big challenge to capture his characteristic features in a short time.

exercise 2

Exercise nr. 2 was another challenge however I really enjoyed it.  It made me think differently.  I made so many sketches using only 5 lines but some of theme did not look good enough.  Finally, I did a good one; you may see that on the sheet nr.  1

                                         sheet nr. 1

                                         sheet nr.2

Exercise nr. 3

This is a picture of Casper... the bone is bigger than he is :)

I scanned different objects that I had at my home.  You may see for example a brush, a leaf or a bunch of cables.

                                                 illustration nr.1

I found Emilyb's blog ...I was very impressed that Emily came up with so many ideas for this exercise  . I liked the one with black and white magazine bits . I thought that was very creative .

I used different kinds of maps to make an illustration number 2.  It looks very colourful and bright.

                                                      illustration nr.2

Illustration number 3 created from different road sings from different countries.  I really like the tail made from road arrows, I think it looks very funny.

My poster ideas for the audience:

A) Child aged 5-9

I captured butterflies at the museum in Oxford.

B )  Teenager ( 13-16 )

I took this picture with my camera.  This bottle contains very famous Oxford Witch.

 C ) Genereal adult audience

       shrunken heads

kids poster stage 1

I draw shapes of kids on the paper.  Next, I scanned this drawing and played a bit in Photoshop.  I used my previous picture of butterflies as a main subject. I wanted to achieve a colourful poster, as the audience demands a bright and catchy image.
