Project : Creating mock-ups

Exercise : Making a mock-up

A mock-up is a version of an artwork to show how it will function and what it will look like when finished.

For this exercise you are going to mock-up a book cover. From your book shelves or the library choose a book title that appeals to you and create a final image for this task.

I decided to take one of my favourite books of all times: “The Little Prince” written and drawn by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. This should be very important book for every young person as it contains the most valuable questions about life, love and friendship.

I had a drawing of a little boy in my old sketchbook that was perfect for this task.  I did this sketch on the brown paper with 2B pencil.  I love to work with the pencil from HB to 3B.  I think that too soft pencil can kill the most important lines so vital for a good sketch.

This is my first stage of the book cover.

I have not done a lot at this stage yet.  I know that I would like to keep the brown paper as a background and a sketch of the boy. I used a scanned paper from a Christmas cracker to make a crown for my Little Prince. I used a Faux Bold Sybil Green font for my title and author name.  I decided to make a small stars and planets from scanned silver Christmas paper.

I like the gold colour for the background I think it works well with that gold and purple crown. I used the same font for the title but I made it bigger and lighter. I also added some gold planets.

This is my last stage for this task.  I cut the main drawing, as it did not give anything interesting the book cover.  I thought that the focus should be only on the boy’s face and his crown. I have made this crown bigger so that it comes out from the drawing and brings the background and the illustration together.

Project : Visuals

Exercise : Viewpoint

Make a small collection of objects around a theme- choose from:

Festival      The morning after    Summertime  Workshop

Using a digital camera move around your set of objects.  Look at them from above and from underneath.  Zoom in and out. Look for interesting combinations of shapes and textures, and document them using photographs.

Do the same thing with drawing but work in a format that is different from your viewfinder, such as square format, or long and thin, or irregular rectangle.

Choose your favourite design.

Using a pencil, draw this design on a larger scale. This line drawing should be descriptive and readable as a visual and not a final artworkin its own right.

  Exercise : Client visuals

From the work you have collected pick at least two finished illustrations. Using a form of line which feels comfortable and which you can confidently manage, create a visual for each illustration.

  Richard Johnson- Aesop's Fables

This is my visual for this task. I treid to use minimum number of lines to present this illustration.

My client visual for this illustration is as simple as it can be. I hope I achieved my goal .

Exercise : Giving instructions

Using the internet, magazines etc. make a collection of examples and reference materials that can help you with an illustration to fit one of the categories below.

Making a cup of tea          Getting to my house         Playing a tune on an instrument

sketch nr. 2

sketch nr.3

This is my first sketch illustration for this task.  I scanned my drawings and put them all together in Photoshop.  My idea is to create a diagrammatic image, which shows how to make a cup of tea.  It starts from the top middle part just as if the clock starts from the top and goes round.

This is my illustration after 1 hour working with my software ... Still some work to do however; I am going to finish for Today.  Hope I will do some progress Tomorrow.

I got my Tutor Report from Assignment nr. 2 just now.  The feedback was very constructive and I know it is just to help me to be a better illustrator and artist in the future.  I can see that one part of my personality may lead to less successful artwork as a professional illustrator.  Many times, I “KILL” THE FRESSNESS OF MY ILLUSTRATION OR PAINTING BY WORKING ON IT TOO MUCH.  I think by writing that sentence with capital letters I will make that mistake less often in the future.  I just have to remember not to work so long under one illustration or project.  I have to take a break more often, come back to the project, and think how long I would like to work on it.

Here I am with my questions:
  • Should I carry on with this project?
  • When should I stop?
  • Is it finishing already?

This illustration is still fresh with rough pencil drawings.  I know at this point that I would like to keep it nearly as it is.  I would like to work JUST A LITTLE on those drawings to make them more visible, especially those one on the white tablecloth.

There is a nice image of tea time that I have found on interent.

.
I finished my illustration.  I am not going to work on it any more.  I just love it how it is.  I think it looks nice, fresh and gives a good description hot to make a cup of tea.  I was trying to fallow my tutor advice and did not spend more time than on previous tasks.

Project : Abstract Illustration

Exercise : Abstract illustration

As you listen to the music create marks which convey your interpretation of the essence or mood of the piece. Work quickly and intuitively to bring a degree of self-expression to the exercise.

I did a few sketches for this task.  The first was for the Dvorak Symphony nr.  Nine called “New world “.  The second was to the Schumann piece called “Kinderszenen”.  The third was called " Ave Verum “composed by Mozart. However, I decided to make an illustration to the music of one of my favourite Polish composer.  Jan A. P. Kaczmarek created music to movie “Finding Neverland “in 2004.

Dvorak Symphony nr. Nine called “New world “.

                                           Schumann piece called “Kinderszenen”.

                                           " Ave Verum “ Mozart

“Finding Neverland “ Jan A.P.Kaczmarek

This is the first illustration to that piece of music.  I was working on it with Photoshop but I knew that was not the last stage of it.

I like this image as it is as light and cheerful as the music.  I hope this could be a great CD cover that would express the mood and the atmosphere of all soundtracks.

Using one of the images as a basis for an illustration, draw up your artwork to make a poster. Add colours and textures to emphasise your message.
Use the word you selected as the title and reproduce it in a typeface you feel suggests or reflects the meaning of the word itself. Position the text alongside the image.
